High potential and gifted education

At Franklin Public School, we are committed to supporting students with High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) to ensure they are challenged, engaged, and able to reach their full potential. Our approach is designed to identify and cater to the diverse academic, social, and emotional needs of gifted and high-potential learners.

We implement differentiated learning programs that stretch students’ thinking and creativity, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a love for learning. Our teachers are trained to recognise the signs of high potential and giftedness, and they use a range of strategies to provide enrichment opportunities both within the classroom and through extracurricular activities.

Franklin Public School also collaborates with the NSW Department of Education’s initiatives and resources for HPGE, ensuring our practices align with best educational standards and policies. We strive to create an inclusive environment where all students feel valued and supported, including those who require advanced learning opportunities.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

Tailored Learning Experiences: Students engage with differentiated tasks that vary in pace and complexity, incorporating higher-order thinking and advanced learning pathways such as acceleration and content compaction.

Ongoing Assessment and Feedback: Formative assessments and structured feedback—both peer and teacher-led—supporting individual growth, strengths-based goal setting, and adaptive learning.

Enriched Curriculum and Critical Thinking: Our programs provide opportunities for inquiry, abstraction, authentic problem-solving, and cross-curricular projects that foster critical and creative thinking.

Collaborative and Leadership Opportunities: Flexible grouping, structured peer collaboration, and leadership roles within the classroom nurture teamwork, confidence, and presentation skills.

Supportive and Safe Environments: We create safe, supportive spaces that encourage exploration, risk-taking, perseverance, and self-assessment across academic and physical activities.
