High potential and gifted education
At Franklin Public School, we are committed to supporting students with High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) to ensure they are challenged, engaged, and able to reach their full potential. Our approach is designed to identify and cater to the diverse academic, social, and emotional needs of gifted and high-potential learners.
We implement differentiated learning programs that stretch students’ thinking and creativity, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a love for learning. Our teachers are trained to recognise the signs of high potential and giftedness, and they use a range of strategies to provide enrichment opportunities both within the classroom and through extracurricular activities.
Franklin Public School also collaborates with the NSW Department of Education’s initiatives and resources for HPGE, ensuring our practices align with best educational standards and policies. We strive to create an inclusive environment where all students feel valued and supported, including those who require advanced learning opportunities.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
-
access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

Enriched Curriculum and Critical Thinking: Our programs provide opportunities for inquiry, abstraction, authentic problem-solving, and cross-curricular projects that foster critical and creative thinking.

Premier's Spelling Bee
The Premier’s Spelling Bee is a popular annual competition that challenges students to sharpen their spelling, vocabulary, and public speaking abilities. This program encourages participants to expand their language skills in a fun and supportive environment. It promotes healthy competition and celebrates achievement, helping students build confidence and boost their literacy skills.
Sporting Opportunities
Our programs encourage students to participate in various sports, improve their skills, and enjoy the benefits of active lifestyles. Whether through competitive events, school teams, or community partnerships, students have the chance to build confidence, develop leadership, and foster a sense of belonging.
Multicultural Public Speaking
The program fosters confidence, respect, and understanding among students from diverse backgrounds, promoting inclusivity and intercultural dialogue. It empowers students to express themselves eloquently and encourages appreciation of multiculturalism within our schools and communities.
Maths Groups
Our Problem-Solving Maths Groups for students in Years 3 to 6 are designed to cater to individual learning needs by providing targeted opportunities to extend thinking and deepen understanding. Through engaging and challenging problem-solving activities, students develop critical thinking skills and apply a range of strategies to tackle complex mathematical concepts. These groups encourage creative and analytical approaches, empowering students to explore ideas confidently and collaboratively while enhancing their overall mathematical proficiency.
Reading Stage One
During Term Four, our Reading Comprehension Skills program for Stage One students focused on extending student thinking through targeted activities that developed inferencing abilities and expanded vocabulary knowledge. By engaging with carefully selected texts and interactive discussions, students can enhance their understanding, make meaningful connections, and think critically about what they read. This program fosters a deeper comprehension and encourages confident communication, laying a strong foundation for early literacy skills.
Writing Feedback
K-6 Writing Feedback Program provides structured opportunities for students to develop their writing skills through self-assessment and explicit teacher feedback using clear writing rubrics. By analysing exemplar texts, students gain a strong understanding of writing conventions, styles, and techniques. This approach encourages deliberate practice, thoughtful revision, and continual growth, empowering students to become confident, skilled writers across all stages of their learning.
STEM Group
Our mid year lunchtime STEM Group offered students a hands-on opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in a collaborative and engaging environment. Through creative challenges and projects, students develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and teamwork while applying STEM concepts in practical ways.
